(classical name: Khemarata Tungaburi), was founded in antiquity and
ranked first in the order of precedence, at the time of the British
annexation of the Shan States. The country was occupied by the Wa up to

attended the Delhi Durbar in 1903 with his first wife and sister in a
party of Shan princes; later in 1905, he built a new palace in the
Imperial Indian style at his capital, Kengtung; a popular and capable
ruler, he abolished domestic slavery in the state; married 1stly, Sao
Nang Paduma, married 2ndly, Nang Fong, married 3rdly, Nang Bodiphlong,

Sāimöng [Sao Sāimöng Mangrāi] (by Nang Daeng), born 13th November 1913,
he was a government minister in Burma soon after independence; he was
also a scholar, historian and linguist; at an early age he was sent to
Bangkok to become a novice monk at the Wat Thepsarin, but later was
recalled and sent to the Shan Chiefs’ School in Taunggyi, then educated
at Rangoon University, and the University of London till 1940; served
with the British Army during WWII; served as Chief Education Officer for
the Shan and Kayah States in the Union of Burma; he was imprisoned by
General Ne Win from 1962 to 1968, after which, he settled in Taunggyi
and was ordained as a monk in a Kengtung Monastery in 1969;Author of The Shan States and the British Annexation. Cornell University, Cornell, 1965; 2nd ed., 1969; The Pādaeng Chronicle and the Jengtung State Chronicle Translated.
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1981; married 1942, Daw Mi Mi Khaing
of Mon ancestry, born 1916, died 15th March 1990, a Burmese scholar and
writer who authoured numerous books and articles on life in Burma
during the 20th century, she is one of the first women to write in
English about Burmese culture and traditions; educated in British
schools; she established Kambawza College in Taunggyi and served as its
principle; author of the following books:- Burmese Family (1946, 1962),
Bloomington, IN, Indiana University Press, 1962, Cook and Entertain the
Burmese Way (1978), Karoma Publishers, 1978, The World of Burmese Women
(1984), London, Zed Press, 1984, and articles:- People of the Golden
Land: Burmese Character and Customs, The Atlantic. February 1958, and
“Burmese Names: A Guide”, The Atlantic, February 1958; and had issue,
four children. He died 14th July 1987.

1987/1997, born 1927, educated in Australia. He died in September 1997
in Yangon.

The photo of Sao Boonwaat and family above is extremely interesting. I grew up in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and in 1967 Sao Boonwaat was the Ambassador of Burma in Ceylon. His wife was well known in Colombo high society as Madam Shirley Boonwaat, though I am not sure if "Shirley" was her real Burmese name. She was about 35 years old at the time, much younger than Mr. Boonwaat, who was I think about 49 or 50. Mrs. Boonwaat had two young sons and there was also a stepdaughter who was in her early 20s, presumably the child of a previous marriage of Mr. Boonwaat. A great tragedy took place in October 1967. Evidently Madam Boonwaat (who was said to be fond of dancing) was having an affair with a Ceylonese musician (pianist) who played with a band at a fashionable night club in Colombo. (The pianist's name was Rex de Silva and I think the band was called the "Rhythm Dukes" and the night club was the "Casablanca Club.") Mr. Boonwaat learned about the affair and is believed to have shot Madam Boonwaat on the night of October 15th at their residence in Colombo. A private doctor who was called to the residence had certified that Madam Boonwaat had died of "cerebral haemorrhage due to hypertension" and the body was privately cremated with Buddhist rites on the 16th. Mr. Boonwaat claimed diplomatic immunity and therefore the local police were unable to investigate the incident but newspaper reports at the time based on eyewitness accounts of some labourers who were on a nearby roof make it clear that Madam Boomwaat was murdered, presumably by her husband. For many weeks in 1967 the "Boonwaat murder" was the most talked-about news item in Ceylon. I can still remember my mother reading out the newspaper accounts of the tragedy even though I was only a child of 9 or so at the time. I believe Mr. Boonwaat served in the Burmese diplomatic service in many countries, including the UK, the Netherlands and France, before serving in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). He was recalled to Burma and had to face trial but I don't know what happened subsequently. If you have any more information about this sad case I would be most interested.

ReplyDeleteWOuld commentators kindly remember that we the direct descendants of Sao Kawn Kiao Intaleng (my grandfather) are still active and living. I would ask all those who make allegations like the one above publish their true names. As an academic myself, I would like to suggest ot the administrator of this website that either they publish the name of who wrote the allegations above or remove it if the author is not willing to come forward. It is unethical to speculate when it involves living children who may be hurt by this.
